The Romantic Road works best as a sequence of distinct places, not a dash between two endpoints. Five days lets you enjoy palace rooms, medieval lanes and the Alpine foothills while still leaving time for an unplanned café or viewpoint.
Day 1: Würzburg
Begin with Würzburg’s baroque side. Tour the Residence if its schedule fits, cross the Old Main Bridge and look back at the fortress and vineyard slopes. Stay centrally so dinner and an evening walk do not require the car.
Day 2: Tauber Valley and Rothenburg
Follow the quieter route south and stop when a village, church or vineyard view catches your attention. Arrive in Rothenburg by mid-afternoon, then remain overnight. The town’s real reward comes after the busiest visitor hours, when the walls and lanes settle down.
Day 3: Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen
Dinkelsbühl offers colorful houses and a remarkably coherent old-town setting. Nördlingen provides a different story: its circular layout sits within an ancient impact crater. Choose one as a longer lunch stop and the other for your overnight, rather than rushing both.
Day 4: Augsburg and the journey south
Augsburg is large enough to feel urban after the smaller towns. Select one or two priorities—the Renaissance town hall, historic waterways or the Fuggerei—and continue toward Füssen before evening. This positions you well for an early castle visit.
Day 5: Füssen, Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein
Use a timed reservation for the castle and leave space for the walk, shuttle or local bus involved in reaching the entrance area. Füssen’s old town and the nearby lakes deserve time of their own. End the day in Füssen or drive onward to Munich only if you are still rested.
How to keep the drive enjoyable
- Set navigation to avoid defaulting to the fastest Autobahn route when the scenic road is the purpose.
- Limit yourself to two meaningful stops per day.
- Book parking with the hotel where possible.
- Carry some cash for small cafés and parking machines.
- Never leave luggage visible in a parked car.
Where to add an extra night
Add it in Rothenburg for photography and quiet mornings, in Nördlingen for a slower small-town day, or around Füssen for lakes and Alpine scenery. If you only have three days, begin in Rothenburg and finish in Füssen instead of compressing the entire route.
