Munich Travel Guide

Munich becomes more interesting once you look beyond Marienplatz. Use the old town for orientation, then follow the food to Viktualienmarkt, the evenings to Westend or Glockenbach and the slow hours to the Isar.

Eat like the place matters

Build lunch from several Viktualienmarkt stalls: a Leberkässemmel, cheese, soup or pastry. A traditional Weißwurst breakfast is eaten before noon. For a neighborhood dinner, explore Westend, Haidhausen or the streets around the former slaughterhouse.

Where the evening comes alive

Choose a beer garden when the weather is kind, a wooden-paneled Wirtshaus for comfort, or Glockenbach for bars. Augustiner-Keller and Hirschgarten deliver scale; smaller neighborhood inns often deliver the conversation.

Where to relax

Walk the Isar near Flaucher, sit above the city at the Monopteros in the English Garden or escape to Westpark. On a hot day, the cool churches and shaded beer gardens are practical, not merely scenic.

The Reisefieber secret

At a traditional beer garden, outside food is often allowed in the self-service area while drinks are purchased there—look for the local setup before unpacking. It is one of Munich’s most pleasant budget meals.

Choose the right base

Old town and Hauptbahnhof are convenient but compare the exact street. Haidhausen feels polished and local, Westend is excellent for Oktoberfest, and Sendling or Giesing can offer better value near direct transit.
