Füssen deserves more than a sleep before Neuschwanstein. Its old town, turquoise Lech, nearby lakes and low-elevation paths create the calm half of a castle trip.
Eat like the place matters
Look for Allgäu Kässpatzen, mountain cheese, roast dishes and a simple Brotzeit. Old-town inns are convenient, but Hopfen am See adds a lakeside promenade and mountain view to dinner.
Where the evening comes alive
Füssen is not a late-night party town. Make the evening about a warm inn, a short old-town walk and an early start. In summer, a lakeside sunset at Hopfensee is the better show.
Where to relax
The mostly car-free Faulenbach Valley connects town with Obersee, Mittersee and routes toward Alatsee. The Kalvarienberg viewpoint and Lechfall are short additions that feel far removed from the castle shuttle crowds.

Split the castle and nature into different half-days. After Neuschwanstein, do not force another major attraction; walk beside a lake or through Faulenbach and let the landscape become the memory.
Choose the right base
Füssen old town is easiest for train travelers. Schwangau is closer to the castles, while Hopfen am See is best for a restorative lake-and-mountain atmosphere if you have a car or accept the bus timing.
