Leave Hauptstraße for the side lanes, or cross to Neuenheim for cafés and neighborhood restaurants. Try regional Baden or Palatinate wine and look for seasonal asparagus, mushrooms or onion tart rather than demanding one fixed ‘Heidelberg dish.’
Where the evening comes alive
The Untere Straße area is lively and student-heavy. For a quieter evening, choose Neuenheim or a wine tavern, then walk the illuminated riverfront instead of staying on the busiest old-town strip.
Where to relax
Cross the Old Bridge and climb part of the Philosophenweg for the classic city view. The Neckar meadow below is the easier picnic and people-watching option when your legs need a break.
